Taryn Ries Attends U-17 Women's International Tournament
U16 ECNL player, Taryn Ries, was chosen this past week to attend the U.S. Soccer U-17 Women's NTC Invitational. This tournament was held at the U.S. Soccer National Training Center in Carson, California (February 11-15) where teams Japan, Mexico, and Canada participated. The girls won all three games bringing home the win for the U.S; 3-1 to Mexico, 2-0 to Canada, and a 3-1 victory against Japan in the finals.
It is a great accomplishment for the club to be able to send players like Taryn to such an event. Taryn just recently joined F.C. Portland Academy and she has been a huge asset to the U16 ECNL team. Taryn's current F.C. Portland coaches are Garrett Smith and Brian Gant. Garrett said, "It is a well deserved honor for Taryn to be representing F.C. Portland as a player on the U.S. U17 National Team. Taryn is a very hard working and gifted player that truly loves the game of soccer. Her personal training habits have enabled her to achieve a level that is competitive with our countries elite players." Taryn said "I'm very excited for this opportunity, I think coming to F.C. last year has prepared me very much for this and helped me become a better player and improve my game."
Taryn is now back home in Portland where she will continue to train hard and grow as a player. F.C. Portland hopes to continue to produce these types of players and help them achieve their goals of playing at the next level.

...with Rob Baarts (U17 & U11 boys coach)
We have worked on a couple different techniques to strike a ball. I’d like to bring them together.
Different situations call for different types of ball strikes. There are times when the situation calls for a bent ball into the forward, other times we may need to drive a ball into the forward and lastly, we may need to play the ball over the top! Having the ability to play any of these forms of ball striking skills will make the game flow better.
How do I choose the correct way to strike the ball? There is no easy answer to this question but start with having the skill to do any of them is first. Next use different types of obstacles and targets to practice the different forms. The more you pick and choose which type of ball strike works best in each situation the more comfortable you will be in a game.
Here are some examples of times to play certain balls:
Bent ball:
- playing a wide player in down the line
- bending a ball around a midfielder to a forward
- shooting, placing the ball into the corner
Driven ball:
- bypassing the midfield from the back to a forward
- splitting two defenders into a forward
- shooting
Chipped ball:
- playing a ball over the top of a defense
- Chipping the keeper for a shot
- Chipping it over a midfielder to your forward
The more you work on these different types of strikes/situations the more comfortable you will be under pressure.
